“I believe the law has the potential of providing justice and fairness, but does not always do so. We have to question ourselves how we can reach a just society. To me, justice is not about the rules or institutions that the law provides, but about the people that are supposed to benefit from the law. It is about fair resolutions in conflicts between humans, about making humans access justice. And in order to reach justice, it means we shouldn’t be afraid of change and facing new challenges. At HiiL, we are not afraid of making that change.”

Nathalie joined HiiL as an Innovating Justice Agent in September 2015. She is part of the Justice Accelerator Team, which supports justice innovations by organizing international challenges designed to seek out innovations that improve access to justice and global justice delivery.

Nathalie is a criminologist with a cum laude masters degree in International Crimes and International Criminal Law from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Due to her Polish heritage she was able to conduct research on women trafficking in Poland where she also finished a minor in Holocaust studies at Uniwersytet Jagiellonski in Cracow.

For her research in Burundi on sexual violence in post-conflict society Nathalie received various awards and her work was presented at the Annual Human Rights Conference in Nottingham. Nathalie’s fieldwork in Burundi made her ambitious to learn more about the synergy between justice and development.

Nathalie was granted a scholarship to do a second masters in Human Rights at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she conducted research on theatre performances by refugees. In London she joined the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as an assistant researcher for the Global Policy and Advocacy department for which she continued to work remotely after returning to The Netherlands. Before joining HiiL, Nathalie also worked as a qualitative researcher on privacy protection in the Dutch Criminal Justice system for the Netherlands Institute for Crime and Law Enforcement.

Nathalie has a passion for critical legal theory and the arts. She is a dancer and occasionally teaches salsa, bachata and kizomba in Amsterdam.
