The economic impact of coronavirus has set those long-term objectives back even further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covid-19\u2019s economic impacts are sure to last longer than the public health emergency and will be a catalyst for a massive increase of justice problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The economic crisis will substantially increase the pressure on justice systems and widen <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/sdg16plus\/justice-for-all-and-the-economic-crisis-70a0493d698e\">the justice gap<\/a>. As employment contracts are terminated and businesses go bankrupt, the demand for legal assistance will rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We propose seven strategies for how justice systems can help, not hinder economic recovery, and how justice leaders can take action to reshape justice systems and support more <em>inclusive, sustainable, and resilient patterns of growth<\/em>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Anticipate demand<\/strong> \u2014 use existing and new data to understand the changing demand for justice and use triage to channel people to the most appropriate service<\/li><li><strong>Invest in personal contact<\/strong> \u2014 reach out to people by phone or digitally to reduce workloads and deliver fairer outcomes.<\/li><li><strong>Address problem clusters<\/strong> \u2014 tackle multiple problems at once to stop disputes from escalating and break vicious cycles.<\/li><li><strong>Prioritise non-court solutions<\/strong> \u2014 use mediation and other dispute resolution mechanisms reducing pressure on formal institutions.<\/li><li><strong>Focus on prevention<\/strong> \u2014 use legal empowerment, online services, ombuds\u2019 institutes and other non-court services to nip disputes in the bud and address the structural roots of economic injustices.<\/li><li><strong>Avoid making justice problems worse<\/strong> \u2014 modify or scrap laws and procedures that make disputes worse and exacerbate injustice.<\/li><li><strong>Use justice to rebuild economies<\/strong> \u2014 put justice systems at the heart of ensuring fair distribution of recovery packages and use them to give marginalised people greater opportunities for economic participation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the strategy document <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.sdg16.plus\/justice-in-a-pandemic\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New report The world was off-track to deliver the SDG justice targets before the Covid-19 crisis.
