{"id":10846,"date":"2021-05-25T18:56:42","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T18:56:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/?p=10846"},"modified":"2021-09-30T15:40:10","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T15:40:10","slug":"ogun-state-announces-civil-justice-transformation-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/fr\/news\/ogun-state-announces-civil-justice-transformation-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Ogun State Announces Civil Justice Transformation Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>HiiL and the Ministry of Justice of Ogun State unveiled a strategy with recommendations for the effective implementation of gamechanging pathways to improve people-centred justice in Ogun State and across Nigeria<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 19 May, high-level officials from Ogun State, including Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Attorney General Akingbolahan Adeniran, Chief Judge Mosunmola Dipeolu, and the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly gathered with HiiL\u2019s Nigeria team to present practical next steps towards civil justice transformation in Ogun State. The strategy<strong> <\/strong>emerged from the Civil Justice Transformation Lab, a series of Stakeholder Dialogue sessions convened by HiiL and targeted at making people-centered justice a reality for Ogun state people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/DSC_8056-1539x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10855\" width=\"580\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/DSC_8056-1539x1024.jpg 1539w, https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/DSC_8056-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/DSC_8056-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/DSC_8056-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/DSC_8056-2048x1363.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the launch of the strategy at the Obas Complex, Oke-Mosan, in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun regarded efficient administration of justice as an important pillar and indicator towards the ease of doing business in any society. \u201cIt is our vision for Ogun State to be the safest place to live, to work and to do business,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThis strategy offers a comprehensive path forward for making people-centred justice possible, not only in Ogun State but across Nigeria more broadly.\u201d &#8211; Ijeoma Nwafor, HiiL\u2019s Justice Transformation Country Representative in Nigeria<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\r\n<div class=\"fve-video-wrapper fve-image-embed fve-thumbnail-image youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:75%;\">\r\n    <iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_HmPNASF_Us?wmode=transparent&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;rel=0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe>    <\/div>\r\n\r\n\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognising that business and justice are inextricably linked, the strategy offers recommendations for addressing people\u2019s justice problems in Ogun State, an economic and commercial hub neighbouring Lagos.&nbsp;Additionally, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Deep-Dive-Ogun-State-Final-Report-Strategy-Launch-April-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deep Dive report<\/a> accompanying the strategy contains data on justice needs and research on \u201cwhat works.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis launch is the next step to showing the outside world what was done,\u201d said Sam Muller, the CEO of HiiL. \u201cAnd it sets out next steps, including arranging a task force structure to continue this process and establishing innovation labs to develop solutions that can be financed in ways to help deliver on the four goals, 19 indicators and three pathways outlined in the strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/ogun-state-strategy_sm1_longer.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10849\" width=\"604\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/ogun-state-strategy_sm1_longer.jpeg 1516w, https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/ogun-state-strategy_sm1_longer-300x182.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/ogun-state-strategy_sm1_longer-768x466.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Land, neighbour and family disputes were identified as the most pressing civil justice needs that Ogun people face. To address these, four Civil Justice Transformation Goals were developed with accompanying indicators and targets to quantify what could realistically be achieved within a two to three year timeframe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Goal 1:<\/strong> Ogun people will make land title registration more flexible, transparent and technologically driven to prevent land disputes.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Goal 2:<\/strong> Ogun people will increase their use of informal and local dispute resolution mechanisms to resolve neighbour issues.<\/li><li><strong>Goal 3:<\/strong> Ogun people will have access to improved resolution of family disputes.<\/li><li><strong>Goal 4:<\/strong> Ogun people will have fast and effective access to protection in the event of domestic violence.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Strategy-Document-Ogun-State-2.6MB.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the Strategy<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would like to inspire an eagerness to think outside the box,\u201d added Theresa Smout, HiiL\u2019s Director of Justice Transformation in West Africa. \u201cAnd to provoke thoughts on how to ensure people-centred Gamechangers can drive a transformative process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state-level Civil Justice Transformation Lab consisted of three dialogues that involved 25 stakeholders including civil justice practitioners, judges, lawyers, academics, and public officials.
