Evelien Evenhuis

Justice Sector Advisor

’Justice’ is a widely used term, and can mean different things to different people. For some of us it is a wish, for others it is a principle, a feeling, or just one of many words to be found in the dictionary. Justice for me is a quality, a force. A compass through life, at any age.

Evelien is a Project Officer in the Justice Transformation team at The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL). In this role, her focus lies on monitoring legal and political developments, as well as supporting the design and implementation of HiiL’s transformation activities in various countries across Africa. Evelien is an activist at heart, with a legal mind and a sharp and analytical view of societal developments from a human rights perspective. She holds a Master of Laws in International Human Rights Law from Lund University and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, and a Bachelor of Laws from Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen.

Through her experiences in a variety of international and cultural contexts, Evelien’s sense of justice developed into a strong personal interest in and commitment to access to justice. HiiL’s no-nonsense attitude and out-of-the-box approach to contributing to a fair and equal world for all is what led Evelien to join the Transformation team.

Evelien loves to explore the unknown and is always up for a new adventure. She feels at her best when surrounded by stacks of books, all kinds of animals and good coffee while listening to her continuously updated favourite playlist.
