Research Themes
HiiL’s research pursues innovation in five themes, which together provide a coherent perspective on the challenges globalisation poses to legal systems. In each of these themes, HiiL research addresses issues highly relevant to our contemporary internationalised and multi-layered environment.
The HiiL research agenda is organised according to the following themes:
- Rule of Law
- Private Actors
- Highest Courts
- Transnational Constitutionality
- Criminal Process and International Crime

''HiiL was conceived as something that had to have added value, both for universities and for practice. We did want to replicate a law faculty or a national research council. Our networked approach, building research bottom-up with practice, is our niche. We connect the best academics on a particular topic with the people and organisations that are struggling with the challenges of law and globalisation.
The goal: work on solutions! And we do that in a way universities cannot.' David Raic
