HiiL Director and Visiting Professor speak at a conference on judicial globalisation in Beijing
On 18 September the Director of HiiL, Sam Muller, and the 2008-2009 HiiL – Maastricht Visiting Professor on the Internationalisation of Law, Antoine Garapon, delivered presentations at a conference on judicial globalisation held at the Law School of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
The seminar, which was opened by the Dean of the School of Law Zhen-min Wang, had been organised by Professor Stephanie Balme of Tsinghua University and Science Po (Paris).
Professor Antoine Garapon, together with his associates Daniel Schimmel and Li Bin, Professor of Law at the Harbin Institute of Technonoly (China), presented the results of the research on legal culture he did during his year at HiiL and the Faculty of Law of the University of Maastricht. He developed a unique method of comparing legal cultures involving the use of images as well as legal texts.
Sam Muller delivered a lecture on judicial internationalisation and in particular its effects on the role and functioning of highest national courts.
Other speakers were Associate Professor Chen Weizuo and Justice David McCombs.
“The conference presented a wonderful opportunity for the Institut des Haut Etudes sur la Justice (IHEJ) and HiiL to once again collaborate and also to build bridges with Chinese legal scholars,” said Sam Muller upon his return to The Hague, ”HiiL and IHEJ are passionate about the same topics and share the same out-of-the-box approach. It was hugely enriching to have the Secretary-General of the IHEJ associated with our Institute for a year.”
