Conquering public spaces

Conquering public spaces 19 September 2013

Filmmaking and other artistic activities as a tool for empowering people with learning disabilities in the Czech Republic (and abroad).

Conquering public spaces is an innovative project of the Inventura organization, the first platform in the Czech Republic for supporting and presenting the artistic and journalistic work of people with learning disabilities. We aim our activities at people who are a little slower in learning things, which seem obvious to other people. These people are usually labelled by the others as mentally disabled, retarded, sub standardly intelligent or, to be more politically correct, as people with learning disabilities.

In the 'Conquering public spaces´ project they hit the streets with microphones and cameras capturing events small and large – pre-election political jousting as well as art festivals, organic markets and an alien landing on one of the Prague hills. They conduct interviews with ferrymen, residents of artistic centres, experts on the cosmos, and prostitutes. They exhibit in caf├ęs and despite all the sceptics, they continue to conquer public spaces by their art. One of the most important activities of the project in 2010 was shooting of a documentary called Earthlings, Who Are You Voting For? (Inventura / 2010 / Czech Republic / 40 min.). The documentary was screened on the public television (Czech television) 3 times, was awarded the audience award during the International Documentary Film Festival in Jihlava and already during the shooting the team won significant media and public interest. In 2011 it was awarded the Pavel Koutecky Award for the best documentary of the year.
