2 June 2010: Complementary Dutch Hoge Raad Seminar on Selection of Cases
On 2nd June 2010, the Dutch Supreme Court (Hoge Raad) once again hosted a seminar on the selection of cases by highest courts, co-organised by the Hoge Raad and HiiL.
The aim of the seminar was to complement the discussion that already took place on Friday 16 April, when judges from the Hoge Raad met counterparts from other countries as well other stakeholders from the Netherlands to discuss different methods of case selection.
According to the initial plan, case-selection mechanisms employed in four countries considered particularly relevant were to be presented and discussed. Due to the major air traffic disruptions caused by the volcanic ash, however, two of the four invited speakers – namely Judge Pauliine Koskelo (Finland) and Judge Jon Stokholm (Denmark) – were unable to arrive to the Netherlands. As a result, while the French and Spanish systems were presented and discussed in detail, the way the Finish and the Danish legal systems deal with case selection could only be presented in a very limited way.
We are very pleased to announce that, in order to complete the picture, we were able to quickly organise a complementary seminar, to focus on case-selection mechanisms in Finland and Denmark. On 2 June 2010, the experience of these two countries was presented, respectively, by Judge Pauliine Koskelo (President of the Finish Supreme Court) and by Judge Torben Melchior (President of the Supreme Court of Denmark).
